The Importance of UV Protection

The Importance of UV Protection

We’re thrilled to enjoy a normal summer once again (minus the cicadas). It’s great to be able to exercise and have fun outside by ourselves, with our families, and even in groups. While it’s normal to want to enjoy ourselves again, it’s important to remember to care for our bodies in the intense summer sun.

UV Radiation

Sun damage to the body is caused by invisible ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV rays can reach you on cloudy and cool days, and they reflect off of surfaces including water, cement and sand. Sun exposure can cause sunburn, skin aging, eye damage and skin cancer, the most common of all cancers. While dermatologists recommend wearing sunscreen indoors and out year-round, we understand that not everyone will do that. You should at minimum apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before venturing outside to allow the sunscreen to bind to your skin. Reapply every two hours of exposure and immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.

Sunscreen Guidelines

The CDC does not recommend sunscreen for infants younger than six months old. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends keeping infants out of the sun during midday and using protective clothing if they have to be in the sun.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that everyone aged 7 months and older — regardless of their skin tone — wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

How To Choose A Sunscreen

Use a sunscreen that says broad-spectrum on its label. This ensures it will screen out both UVB and UVA rays.

If possible, avoid the sunscreen ingredient oxybenzone because of concerns about hormonal properties. Remember, though, that it’s important to take steps to prevent sunburn, so using any sunscreen is better than not using sunscreen at all.

For sensitive areas of the body, such as the nose, cheeks, tops of the ears, and shoulders, choose a sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These products may stay visible on the skin even after you rub them in, and some come in fun colors that kids enjoy.

Wear Sunglasses

Sunglasses protect your eyes from UV rays and reduce the risk of cataracts. They also protect the tender skin around your eyes from sun exposure.

Sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays offer the best protection. Most sunglasses, regardless of cost, meet this standard. Wrap-around sunglasses work best because they block UV rays from sneaking in from the side.
