Benefits Of Postpartum Chiropractic Care

After nine months of eagerly waiting, childbirth welcomes that new baby bliss to you and your family. Caring for and bonding with your newborn is a beautiful gift, though many women also experience the impact in the aftermath of childbirth.

As it copes with the repercussions, your body carries the impact, manifesting both physically and mentally. While your impulse may be to push past the pain to focus on your baby, it’s imperative to care for yourself, too.

Postpartum chiropractic care helps treat the trauma, allowing your body to recover and focus on savoring these moments with your baby.

Postpartum Physical Trauma Recovery

All stages from pregnancy to labor and delivery take a physical toll. The impact especially effects the pelvis and spine, misaligning your body and causing pain or discomfort. While uncomfortable effects generally subside as your body returns to its natural state, some women may experience postpartum chronic pain. Those who experienced complications like emergency cesarean sections or hemorrhaging endure long-lasting symptoms of the trauma.

Whether the pain is temporary or chronic, postpartum chiropractic care promotes healing. Corrective exercises and adjustments restore the nervous system’s natural alignment and the body’s proper range of motion. These procedures alleviate discomfort in the body, targeting the sources of pain impacted by delivery and pregnancy.

Treating The Mental Impact Of Delivery

Though childbirth and meeting your baby brings joy, you may experience other, less talked about side effects. It’s an open secret that delivery, with or with complications, is a traumatic experience. Some women may experience PTSD or postpartum depression. Living with physiological side-effects, like hormonal shifts or bodily pain, impacts your mental wellness, too.

Postpartum chiropractic care is a rehabilitative process that allows your body to recover mentally, as much as it does physically. In addition to possible therapy or other modes of treatment, you may find chiropractic sessions mentally healing. Chiropractic care provides a private space to treat tension in your body, alleviating stress and restoring the capacity to focus on these special moments.

Care For The Whole Family

Newborns and children in all stages of growth find benefits of chiropractic care. As you and your baby experience delivery together, your baby experiences distress within his or her body, too. While, like their mother, the distress often alleviates with time, chiropractic care may help their recovery and adjustment to our world. Gentle procedures allow your baby to maintain proper growth. As they age, progressing from toddlers to adolescents, chiropractic adjustments help your child maintain their health. Regular alignments can help aid in treating conditions early or work as preventative measures for potential ones. Chiropractic care benefits the whole family as you teach your children the benefits of taking care of their health.

Baby Bumps: Having A Breech Baby

You have a lot to look forward to when expecting. You expect your stomach to grow with your baby bump, but you won’t always anticipate bumps in the road, such as your baby being breech. During most pregnancies, babies turn their heads down and position themselves for birth. However, 3 to 5 percent of babies won’t turn during late preterm. If your baby presents him or herself with the body facing upward, they are considered breech. Untreated, this poses health risks to both the mother and child by making birth especially difficult.

Learning that your baby is breech can be scary, but there are solutions to reposition your baby for safe delivery. Here are some tips to use when you’re told your baby is breech.

Take A Deep Breath

You may be asking a lot of questions or worrying about outcomes. The first step is to take time for yourself. Deep breathing exercises can be beneficial. One exercise is the 4-7-8 method. Breathe in deeply for four seconds, filling your lungs with air. Then, hold your breath for seven counts — either in seconds or heartbeats. Let yourself be in the moment, focusing on the counts. Finally, exhale, heavily pushing the air out. While this won’t take away the stress completely, it may help ground yourself and lower your blood pressure.

Work With Your OB/GYN

Check up regularly with your doctor. He or she will create a treatment plan for you and your baby to determine the best route of several options. If the baby is breech at an early stage, speak to your doctor about natural remedies to turn your baby.

Your physician may recommend External Version (EV). During this procedure, your physician will use their hands to press the stomach, gently guiding the baby into the correct position.

Consider Birth Options

For breech babies, physicians recommend delivery through Cesarean section — the procedure in which the birth is conducted through abdominal incisions. In some cases, vaginal deliveries may be considered, though this can pose risks.

Dr. Kimberly Muhlenkamp-Wermert provides personalized support and treatment for expectant mothers using the Webster Technique, a non-invasive method, which can help your baby assume the appropriate birthing position.

Webster Technique is used to identify and remove intrauterine constraint caused by the malposition of the sacroiliac joints. This technique has been shown effective in reducing intrauterine constraint in expectant mothers who are presenting breech, allowing the fetus to be able to move into vertex position for labor. Basically, this technique aligns the pelvis properly to ease ligament stretching, calm discomfort, and allow the baby the freedom to move around and assume the appropriate position for birth.

Professionally trained in this field, she is one of the few female chiropractors trained in our area certified by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. Dr. Kim listens to your needs and creates a treatment plan to support you every step of the way.

Having your baby become breech can be a concerning experience but remember you’re not alone. At Live Well Chiropractic Center, we’ll be your champions through every stage of your pregnancy from preconception to post-delivery and family care. 4 Ways Chiropractic Care Can Help During Pregnancy

4 Ways Chiropractic Care Can Help During Pregnancy

Carrying a child is one of the most beautiful experiences a woman can have — and it can be one of the most physically uncomfortable experiences as well. From morning sickness to the near super-powered sense of smell, every woman’s experiences are different, but nearly all women report suffering some sort of pregnancy-related pain. Here are a few of the most common pain points, and how to get relief naturally that can help you and your baby have a stress-free birth.

Low Back Pain, Headaches and Neck Pain

Pregnancy back pain typically happens where the pelvis meets your spine, at the sacroiliac joint. This is typically caused by weight gain, stress, hormone changes and natural muscle separation as your uterus grows and your body prepares for birth. Carrying a child temporarily changes your center of gravity and impacts your flexibility, both of which alters your posture. These changes can also cause pain in the neck and headaches.

It is crucial to adjust and align your spine appropriately so you can feel well while your body changes and your baby grows. This process continues to open the spine and allow the nervous system to function effortlessly, reducing low back pain, neck pain and headaches.

Pelvic Balance

Establishing pelvic balance and alignment is another reason to have chiropractic care during pregnancy. When the pelvis is misaligned, it may reduce the amount of room available for your growing baby. A misaligned pelvis may also make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible position. This can lead to Breech positions or the need for a C-section.

Working with a Webster Technique certified chiropractor may help you achieve a more balanced pelvic alignment. With proper nerve supply, the labor process will flow smoothly and naturally with the least amount of pain to you, and less stress and trauma on your newborn.

The Webster Technique - Chiropractic Care for Expecting Mothers

The Webster Technique – Chiropractic Care for Expecting Mothers

There are many benefits to visiting a chiropractor during pregnancy. Live Well Chiropractic Care specializes in treating expecting mothers through the Webster Technique, which can help a baby be in an optimal position as a mother prepares to give birth. If you are an expecting mom, here’s more about the Webster Technique so you can decide if this type of chiropractic care is right for you:

What is the Webster Technique?

A concept birthed by International Chiropractic Pediatrics Association (ICPA) founder Larry Webster in the 1970s, the Webster Technique is a holistic chiropractic practice that provides a sacral analysis and adjustment that reduces the effects of sacral subluxation/SI joint in expecting mothers. Receiving this treatment can adjust and align a pregnant woman’s spine and pelvis into the proper placement, which can help a baby retain a natural position in the womb leading up to delivery.

How does the Webster Technique help expecting mothers?

Like any chiropractic care, performing the Webster Technique on an expecting mother is both gentle and completely safe. Receiving chiropractic care using the Webster Technique during pregnancy is an effective way to make a patient more comfortable during pregnancy and safer while giving birth, especially for high-risk pregnancies. While the Webster Technique can’t turn a breeched baby, it does relieve tension that can occur in the uterus during pregnancy, which allows for a baby to naturally assume an ideal position.

Summer Workouts for Pregnant Women

Summer Workouts for Pregnant Women

Between the heat and changes in a woman’s body, being pregnant in the summer can be uncomfortable, especially if you are used to a certain workout routine. But there are many workouts that can help you beat the heat in the summer and stay in shape even if you are pregnant. All expecting mothers should always consult an OBGYN before beginning any workout routine. Here are a few of our favorite recommended workouts for pregnant women:

Indoor Swimming

Indoor swimming is a great exercise for women who are expecting. Swimming is low impact and easy on joints, which can minimize soreness or discomfort associated with pregnancy. Many gyms also have water aerobics classes that can be a fun, social and safe way for pregnant women to exercise comfortably in the summer.

Cardio Workouts

In addition to indoor swimming, there are many low-impact cardio exercises that can be performed at the gym. Brisk walking on a treadmill, cycling on a stationary bike or using an elliptical can help keep your heart rate up and stress levels down. Aerobic classes such as dancing or Zumba can also be a way for pregnant women to break a sweat in the summer without extreme risk of injury.

Yoga

While some yoga classes are heated and dynamic, many yoga studios offer classes that are slower paced and not heated, which can be ideal for pregnant women. Practices such as prenatal, yin and restorative yoga focus on gentle stretches and relaxation through static poses and control of the breath. These yoga practices are also good for back and spine alignment, which can help ease some of the discomforts of being pregnant. Your yoga instructor can work with you to make sure you stay safe in certain postures.

Pelvic Exercises

As your delivery date nears, it’s important to prepare your pelvic area for giving birth. Squats and pelvic thrusts can help reduce back pain and prepare your lower abdominal muscles for delivery. Squats and pelvic thrusts can be performed with a personal trainer or on your own at a gym or in the comfort of your home … and in the A/C!

Exercise and chiropractic treatment for expecting mothers

In addition to these pregnant-friendly summer exercises, we recommend chiropractic care during pregnancy to make the process as comfortable as possible. Live Well Chiropractic Center’s Dr. Kimberly Muhlenkamp-Wermert specializes in chiropractic care for pregnant women from conception to post-delivery. She can also discuss workouts with you that can make your pregnancy easier in the summer.

Yes, that’s a baby! :)

For those of you who have noticed my quickly expanding abdomen recently and have been wondering, but too polite to ask: Yes, that’s a baby! My family and I are beyond excited to announce that we are expecting the arrival of baby #4 in early October. We still aren’t sure if we are going to find out the sex of the baby this time around. We did not with the first 3, but I kind of want to know with this one! Please bear with me with my pregnancy fatigue over the next few months, making a baby, raising 3 little ones and taking care of patients can be hard work 🙂 As with all my previous pregnancies, we will conduct business as usual at Live Well Chiropractic Center until the arrival of our little pumpkin in October!

Chiropractic Care for Expecting Mothers

Pregnancy can be one of the most exciting times in an expecting mother’s life. Whether it’s visiting a gynecologist or primary care doctor, getting proper medical care during pregnancy is beneficial to both the mother and baby. Adding a chiropractor to the list of doctors and specialists to see during pregnancy or even while trying to conceive is not only beneficial, but it can help make pregnancy easier and less uncomfortable.

From pre-conception to post delivery, here is why you should visit a chiropractor if you are expecting (or trying to be).

Pre-Conception

There are many misconceptions about what you can do to better your chances of becoming pregnant. There is no one specific cause of infertility, but one can be associated with an improperly functioning nervous system. Visiting a chiropractor can help with spinal alignment, which directly impacts the nervous system. While visiting a chiropractor doesn’t solve the problem of infertility, it is good supplemental care in addition to other fertility treatments such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF).

Pregnancy

Many expecting mothers ask if it’s safe to see a chiropractor during pregnancy. Not only is it safe, but it’s recommended to ease the pain and discomfort that can come along with being pregnant. Chiropractic care can help mothers-to-be maintain a better center of gravity and posture during pregnancy. Seeing a chiropractor and having proper pelvic alignment, allows the baby room to get in optimal position for delivery.

Post Delivery

Just as chiropractic care is a good way to make pregnancy more comfortable, postpartum chiropractic care can also help with rehabilitation. Visiting a chiropractor after giving birth can help with recovery time and alignment in the pelvis and back. Seeing a chiropractor can also assist with getting a new mother’s body back into its pre-pregnancy state, which can minimize the chances or symptoms of postpartum depression.

From pre-conception to post delivery, Live Well Chiropractic Center’s Dr. Kimberly Muhlenkamp-Wermert specializes in chiropractic pregnancy techniques and is certified by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) in The Webster Technique.
